Dr. Jara "Cardiology Pillar" dies due to COVID-19

A "pillar" of cardiology has died because of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), his companions said on Tuesday.

In a Facebook post, The Philippine Heart Association announced the death of Dr. Raul Jara, its former President and "one of the great pillars of cardiology".

When asked if the doctor died because of the virus, the group answered "yes" and it would be best to get information from the Philippine Heart Center, which treated him.

PHC Medical Director Dr. Joel Abanilla told ABS-CBN that Dr. Jara tested positive for the respiratory disease. It was not immediately clear when Jara passed away and whether he had other pre-existing medical conditions.

The doctor is the latest Filipino doctor to reportedly die because of the virus which follows Dr. Israel Bactol of the PHC and anesthesiologist Dr. Gregory Macasaet. The health department has yet to confirm on how many doctors have died due to the virus.

The post also includes that appears as a statement from Jara's family, who said he "took pride in serving the Filipino people", and treated his students "as his children and the hope for future generations."
