FCPC stands out at world research conference

The 10 participants from First City Providential College (FCPC) successfully presented their researches at the World Conference on Applied Science, Engineering, and Technology (WCASET), February 27.

Selected WCASET participants from FCPC included teachers from the faculty of Education, Psychology, Nursing, Biology, Tourism, and Computer Studies, and students from Communication and Hotel Management.

First City Providential College-Bulacan was among the colleges and universities which participated at the WCASET 2020 along with Universitas Kristen Maranatha-West Java, University of Perpetual Help System DALTA-Laguna, Quirino State University, and Isabela State University.

"Nag-stand out tayo sa lahat ng presenter because we followed the correct standards in research presentation [during] the conference. Of course all the presenters have communication skills that caught the attention of all the participants. Also, with the guidance of our vice president Dr. Echel Antero and our president Dr. Estrella Simon who supported us," Director of Center for Research Development and Innovation Arabelle Baquiler said.

The event was held at St. Giles Makati Hotel from February 26-27, 2020, and was organized by the Institute For Engineering Research and Publication (IFERP).

The organizing committee invited representatives from various fields in Southeast Asia to diversify academic discussions at the forum including keynote speakers and presenters.

A total of 80 participants from Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines presented their distinct researches, from Hybrid Levenberg-Marquardt Artificial Neural Network Model to Urban Tourism Master Development Plan for Isabela City.

Moreover, some participants from FCPC told Woke Up Daily about their experiences and learnings during the WCASET 2020.

"It was nerve-racking. Nakaka-stress siya. To be honest, inatake ako ng anxiety ko," College of Business Management (COBM) Instructor Raisa Joan Abaigar said.

"I've learned that everyone has power in terms of research. We are unique and we can be an inspiration to the youth who are doing research and consider it as an stressful activity of life. Ako, first time ko sa international conference, I've been in a series of questioning myself before I stood out on the stage [to represent] the school. In short, 'wag lang matakot kasi eto lang kaya mong gawin, matakot ka kasi wala kang ginawa. Maniwala ka sa kakayahan mo," she added.

The COBM teacher presented her topic about Understanding the E-Purchasing In First City Providential College Cafeteria at the said forum.

She also shared one of her remarkable moments during the event.

"...the question and answer portion. I never expected na masasagot ko siya kasi magulo na utak ko nung nagtatanong palang siya (the other participant)," she said.

Patrick Villanueva, a student under Bachelor of Arts in Communication, and Marielle Elumba, BS , emphasized how important international conferences are for young researchers like them.

"Well syempre hinahayaan tayo ng mga international conference tulad nitong WCASET na i-showcase yung mga ina-aral natin. Para na rin mapatunayan natin na as students eh hindi tayo pahuhuli sa mga professionals and prove that even we students can contribute to the world of research," said Villanueva.

"Actually, it is very interesting and challenging. Interesting, because you will be educated and have wider knowledge about the things you don’t usually hear or see. Challenging, because hearing other presenters' [studies] will make you think and make you want to create something... The word “research” may sound [difficult] and complicated but it helps a lot, not only for us students but for everyone in general, especially for those who are planning to create or innovate something," said Elumba.

Villanueva's study focused on The Influence of English Translation Methods on High School Students' Comprehension of Clips and Films, while Elumba focused on Franchising Business in the Philippine Setting.

On the other hand, Darlene Joy Magos, Guidance Associate, also shared how research can contribute to colleges and universities like FCPC.

"Doing research is very essential regardless of the context or situation why you are doing it," she said.

"In FCPC, it is necessary to do researches as it will not only enhance the capabilities and knowledge of the students and employees, but also the responsibility to be observant and critical of whatever is happening to our institution," she explained.

Magos also said that certain issues and concerns must be addressed in order to make "better solutions."

The guidance associate also encouraged everyone to have a positive view or attitude towards doing researches.

"Make a research about something that is of your interest," she encouraged.

She also added that it is not only a "requirement" to graduate, but it is a tool to improve one's patience, critical thinking skills and writing skills, as well as help a person to be open-minded and receptive.

"If we all follow a systematic method of doing researches properly and thoroughly, we can come up with very useful studies," said Magos.

The other WCASET participants from FCPC are namely: Jean Castillo-Dunghit, Cherry May Palacio, Ghia Andes Camposano, Josiah Buhayan, and Jennallyssa Marie Eligino.

WCASET in Manila is on its first international conference for this year and it still has 8 remaining international conferences set in Dubai, Indonesia, Vietnam, Bangkok, Bali, Turkey, Malaysia, and GOA. The schedule of the next conference is set on March 18-19 while the last will be on December 29-30.

WCASET is a international platform that aims to further research and technological advancements in applied science, engineering, and technology.

FCPC President Estrella Simon and Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) Echel Simon-Antero also encouraged everyone to conduct more researches especially those who are interested in joining international conferences like WCASET.

"They really need to come up with a very useful research which we will utilize for the solution of problems in the school and in the community. It may serve as innovation and development for the entire country and even in the entire world," said Simon.

"Stay curious. If they stay curious, they will always have that question in mind and they will search for answers. And research is actually searching for the most accurate answer. Because you never know the absolute truth, but you can assume that the result is nearest to the truth. So stay curious and remember that research is fun," said Antero.
