Sen. Pimentel: Price spike during emergency situations a "violation of the Price Act"

Senator Koko Pimentel released a statement on Monday following several reports regarding the sudden increase of price of face masks in stores amid the spread Taal ashfall along Calabarzon and Metro Manila.

The situation got the attention of many as some photos uploaded by the netizens went viral.

The photos indicate their proof of overpriced face masks.

Pimentel said that anyone who "take advantage" of the current situation caused by Taal eruption by selling necessary materials and goods higher than the retail price violate the existing Price Act or Republic Act No. 7581 of the Philippines.

The Price Act is a law that provides consumer protection to ensure that all basic necessities and prime commodities are sold at reasonable prices at all times especially during emergencies.
